This building operates on the site of the former Bennet House Hotel (1863). The present building was erected in 1918 by The Merchant's Bank of Canada (Bank of Montreal). The bank occupied the building until 1943 when it was forced to close due to war regulations. The property was then used by Town Council until it was purchased by the Royal Bank in 1947. RBC used the site until 1973 when it moved across the street. Past owners include J. Pratt, T. Bennett and J. Coffen.
