Innovation & History Together!
June 28, 2017 saw the unsightly electrical box in the Downtown Georgetown Memorial Garden wrapped in History. The Dedication Ceremony saw Mayor Rick Bonnette as well as Town of Halton Hills Council members and locals alike out to celebrate. Recently a new canopy was added, to protect our precious history.
The front side, facing Main Street, is a dedication to the McGibbon Hotel, both past and present. The side facing the garden explains the stones at the base of the tree which represent over 150 years of stability. These stones were the foundation which both the “Clark” and “McGibbon” hotels stood upon. They were locally quarried and moved to Georgetown, and are now the foundation in which future generations will walk upon in the Memorial Garden, creating more memories.
Dedicated to our past, present and innovative thinking, the back access panels, facing the Church Street parking lot, extol the history of the Clark Hotel from board to brick including an 1877 sketch; the Memorial Tree, its unique features and artist Ken Hall; and Mr. Sandy Mackenzie. Information of the middle door panel speaks about Sandy’s dedication and innovative thinking over the years making Downtown Georgetown a better place to live and visit. He has spent his entire life in the Downtown Georgetown area.
Come to the North side of Main Street South at Church Street. As locals say “Beside Yong’s”. We are incredibly for the community involvement with this unique project including the donation of the stones and the wrap itself to the Downtown Georgetown BIA by SilverCreek Commercial Builders in cooperation with the Town of Halton Hills.
Downtown Georgetown BIA Manager, Wendy Farrow-Reed stated, “This artistic, yet historical feature is the first of its kind in Halton Hills and we hope and look forward to including more in the Downtown Georgetown community.”
